Round Towers take on St Clarets in the fifth round of the league (Saturday 20th June 2009)
Rount towers had two fixtures set for the weekend of the 20th June. Our senior team had their fifth round of their league campain against St Clarets at Hendon North London. From the throw in both teams were guilty of misplaced passes, Towers pressed the Clarets and forced mistakes especially in defence. Clarets were first to open the scoring with a fine point in the first ten minutes before towers equalised from a free kick slotted over by Shane Sullivan, this settled the towers and from the kickout towers collected the ball and finding Craig Mullin in space out on the wing collected the ball and rounding his marker cut in field in front of goal shot into the top corner for Towers first goal of the game.
Shane Sullivan was to add further to towers goal tally as a high ball dropped into the square a mistake between the clarets keeper and the full back resulted in a loose ball Shane Sullivan was first to react and slotted the ball into the Clarets net. The towers only managed to score a single point in the last ten minutes of the first half when Sean Hickey knocked over for his only score of the game. Clarets managed to pull back a goal in the last five minutes after finding some space in behind the towers defence. At half time the score was Round Towers 2:03 Clarets 1:03.
With the conditions changing at half time and it starting to rain it lead to slippy conditions at the start of the second half from the throw in both teams were foul of not holding onto the ball due to the wet conditions, passes were dropped an the resulting player was put under pressure thus loosing the ball. Clarets were first to open the scoring after finding the corner forward in space he shot low and hard into the net for their second goal to level the game. In the next ten minutes both teams found the ball hard to handle and the simple pass was rushed and not executed correctly. Clarets then extended their lead by a poing before Craig Mullin found the net for the second time for the towers. Timmy O Donovan then extended the lead to three points with a fine point before Craig Mullin got his name on the sheet with his final score of the day. Clarets then rallied and pulled back two points to leave a single score between the teams. With Dave O Connor on for Mick Hanley who had to be substituted with a badly dislocated finger collected the ball from the towers kick out turning and shooting from outside the twenty one the ball dropped short and dipping under the crossbar and into the net for Towers fourth goal of the game. Final Score Round Towers 4:05 St Clarets 2:06
