It is a great honour to be re-elected Chairman of Round Towers GFC in
2008.
Firstly, I would like to pay my respects to all my predecessors and
all those that played, and ran the affairs of the Club since its formation
in 1932. I am hoping that along with my committee we can proudly carry
the Club forward and build on the firm foundations already laid.
Last year saw our 75th anniversary as a club, whilst on the social side
we marked this amazing achievement with a grand Dinner Dance, attended
by an t-Uachtaran; Nicky Brennan. We also had a reunion dinner dance
in Dublin and had an auspicious tournament in Ruislip featuring Skerries
from Dublin, London's St. Brendans and Sarsfields from Kildare.
Our 75 Committee done the club proud and I would like to thank them
for their efforts.
On the football side, we were looked after once again by the irrepressible
Chris Lloyd, and though try as we may, we missed out on a final place
in the Senior Championship, going down to a Kingdom Gaels team in the
semi final. We had an unbeaten run in division 1, but missed out again
by 2 points on the final.
Perhaps though, the most noteworthy statistic to take from last year
was the our successful run in the McArdle Cup. As a Club with a long
established under age system, it is imperative that we never overlook
the efforts put in by the Minor Committee. In a year where London football
lost another 2 teams, and many clubs struggled with 1 team, Round Towers
were able to field 3 adult sides, all of this is due to the unstinting
dedication of the minor club patrons. Credit to Michael Maher Sr, his
committee and Managers in the minor team, and all those involved in
the Minor club since it's formation.
The McArdle cup competition allowed London born players who had not
played senior championship to play in this junior competition. After
negotiating the group stages we beat Tir Chonnail Gaels in the semi
final, and after drawing in the final, we lost out to Dulwich Harps
in the replay.
Our reserve team were beated in the Championship semi final, and after
finishing top of the reserve league we were unfortunately beaten in
the reserve league final.
All in all though it was an admirable year on the footballing front,
between our Senior, Reserve and McArdle teams, over 50 London born players
togged out in Towers colours during the year, a remarkable feat for
any club.
Our ladies led by Kelly Ann, were unlucky not to build upon their 2006
championship, and suffered a defeat against Holloway in the final. We
hope next year the girls give it their all and are back competing for
silverware in 08.
2008 will see us chasing the same goals as last year, nothing less than
a Senior Championship will sate the hunger of this Round Towers team,
we also want to repeat last years fete of going unbeaten in the league,
but this year, to go one better and win it outright. And for our Reserve
and McArdle cup teams to distinguish themselves once more.
